Community Water System implemented a treatment technique change in January 2013. The change involved a move from strictly gaseous chlorine as our primary disinfectant to chlorine dioxide. Chlorine dioxide has been around since the 1940s and is a stronger oxidant than pure chlorine and thus more effective against bacteria, viruses and Cryptosporidium. It is also very effective at oxidizing dissolved organic matter into a state that reduces the formation of disinfection by-products.
